They Don’t Own Cars

Car ownership is such a normal part of life in the US that even homeless people own a car. This is also the most used mode of transportation, especially with commuting to and from work, and is an indescribable part of American culture, except the Amish. When you’re visiting an Amish community, don’t expect to see a lot of vehicles around. Sure, some of them are seen in one, but probably not in the driver’s seat.

They generally shun modern technology to the point that they will use a horse and buggy to get around the various places they have to go to. Talk about old school, right? We wonder, though, which one is cheaper, gas for the vehicle or food for the horse. Their strong religious beliefs prevent them from acquiring one, though no specific rules are disallowing them from riding a modern vehicle. They also believe that not using vehicles bond their community more.
