Matrimonial Vegetable

You might be asking, “matrimonial vegetable? Whatever does that mean?” Well, first and foremost, the vegetable in question is celery. It’s unusual, but celery holds a certain degree of importance to the Amish wedding culture that a family growing batches of them may be seen as a sign that someone from the household is getting married.

This leafy green is so significant because it has plenty of roles in the religious community. They use it for their food, their medicine, and even as a replacement for flowers for wedding decorations. It’s completely different from what most of us are used to, but that’s just how it is for them. There’s literally no hint of extravagance in whatever they do. While we might not exactly use celery as wedding decor, we can absolutely learn a thing or two from the Amish about humility and modesty.
