Adult Baptism

Unlike other religions where the baptism of a child is a practice, the Amish people do not allow such for religious reasons. They are followers of Jesus, and so they reject the idea of a child, who has no concept of choice just yet, be inducted into the church as an infant. Voluntary baptism as an adult is the accepted practice and a fundamental doctrine of the Anabaptist movement.

On average, the typical youth gets baptized at around 21 years old, which is already considered legal age in many countries. However, what is their basis for not allowing infant baptism? The Amish community believes that infant baptism has no mention in the Bible. They also think that someone who is being welcomed into the religion should have a great degree of knowledge of what is right and wrong and be able to make the proper, voluntary decision.
